A LESSON FROM ALOES “The performances are all compelling as each actor creates a vital piece of a subtle yet shattering story. Fugard has written more popular plays, but “A Lesson From Aloes” in this finely realized production reveals the hard truths of his country at that fractured time as well as any.” –MARCUS CROWDER, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

Nominated for 7 San Francisco Bay Area Theater Critics Circle Awards 2019

A Lesson From Aloes

By Athol Fugard
Directed by Timothy Near

Set during apartheid South Africa, A Lesson From Aloes follows a liberal white Afrikaner who believes in resistence, his unsettled English wife struggling with the personal costs, and a black activist who has everything to lose, painting a portrait of loyalty, race, sanity, and survival under an oppressive government. This dynamic and timely drama decries racial divides while celebrating the resilience of the human spirit. A Lesson From Aloes debuted in Johannesburg, South Africa and was later produced at Yale Repertory Theatre, then on Broadway in 1981, where it was named “Best Play” by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play.

ThIEves

By Charlotte Miller
Directed by Daniel Talbott

Charlotte Miller’s Thieves is a gritty portrait of a family in struggle and upheaval. When the family matriarch dies, three wayward children are reunited with their estranged father at their East Texas estate, ready to stake their claim.  In the emotional chaos that ensues, Miller exposes the wounds inflicted and the truths ignored in the search for belonging and understanding.  Are they really here to say goodbye? Or to plunder what’s left of a past that might better be forgotten?
